Simplifying the closet...

One of the places where I tend to be very dishonest with myself is in my very own closet.  I say things in my head like, "I will wear that...someday" or "That was really expensive- I can't get rid of it even though I really don't wear it", or my favourite, "I know I will fit back into that size soon".

Lies, lies, lies.

So this weekend I had an honest look at my closet.  It wasn't pretty, but I did it.  I looked at each item and asked myself the following three questions:

1.  Do I wear it?

2.  Does it fit?

3.  Do I love it?

More times than not, the answer was no- which resulted in me getting rid of four bags of clothing, shoes and accessories that someone else could be using.

I'm a t-shirt and jeans kinda girl.  Dressing up is a skirt, t-shirt and a jacket.   Throw in boots, ballet flats and sneakers along with my wedding rings and some diamond studs- and you have the extent of my real wardrobe.

So I pared it down to this...

Yes, my shoe boxes are labeled.  I used to also include how many hours you could comfortably wear them.

Jackets, sweaters, shirts, skirts, pants.

I know.  I'm an accessory maven...

Texas winter stuff...

I walk into the closet now and it feels lighter.  Simpler.  I can easily see what I have and throw an outfit together.  I'm loving it and looking forward to paring it down even more.  I am committed to only purchasing quality pieces and keeping it very simple.  If one piece is added, another will go out.

Next up... the pantry.

  1. love it! so brave of you! seriously, I keep trying to really do this too, but can't seem to part with those certain pieces (although they are never ever ever worn!).....one more way to simplify life....looks so clean and nice in there, too

    1. Look at it like you are keeping someone else from wearing and enjoying it. Locked up in a closet it is not making anyone happy. I did that with many of my pieces and it really works!

  2. I did this last year and I'm going to do it again.. It's so worth it. I took EVERYTHING out of the closet and vacuumed and then only put back what I loved and fit.
