World Down Syndrome Day...

Today, March 21, 2014 is World Down Syndrome Day!

Reposted from The International Down Syndrome Coalition...

I had Sara when I was only 22 years old and honestly a bit lost as to where my life was going.  She ended up being such a compass for me and became the yardstick that everything around me had to measure up to.  She is my own personal hero—watching how she embraces life and truly experiences things to the fullest is such a powerful thing to witness.

Sara’s strength is her keen sense of being aware.  She watches, listens, and remembers.  She has compassion for others and always remembers someone’s name after she has met them.  When you are with Sara, you feel that she really cares about you.

Sara’s dreams are like any other 21 year old girl’s—she dreams of love, companionship, friendship, a job, and fun.  She wants to work in a hospital and help people to feel better.

Down syndrome has both changed my life completely and didn’t change a thing at the same time.  I think I appreciate the little things far more than I ever did.  I look at others and notice abilities before disabilities.  I am more tolerant and understanding because Sara sets a perfect example of how to do that every day.

I would like to tell the world that Sara is every bit as successful as any other kid her age.  She is bright, witty, sincere, and helpful.  She contributes in a way that I never imagined possible and her love is genuine and without conditions.

  1. I love each post about Sara! She is so sweet. She brings a smile to my face. I had both my children by the age of 18! We grew together and they taught me along the way. Have a wonderful day!

  3. Sara is a rockstar! I look forward to seeing what she has been up to in your blogs. And what an artist that girl is! Thank you for sharing your Sara with us...and that wonderful "Dear Future Mom video." I saw love, ability, and lives lived fully and happily. Thank you also for your wonderful ability to teach us...not only about fabulous decorating, but about life's treasures.

  5. You are a blessed mama! Thank you for sharing this video. It brought smiles as I remembered all the different children with downs that I worked with in special education. It also brought tears to my eyes that people might not choose life because of a downs diagnosis. The video is right it might be hard but life is hard and the joy is made that much sweeter by it. God bless Sara and her mama!

  7. I just found your blog and decided to read a few older posts. I'm so glad I did..."meeting" Sara is a joy! She has the most beautiful smile and honestly, joy emanates from her. I used to have a neighbor that was downs young lady too. She had the greatest sense of humor and so interesting! I don't see her as often now but like your Sarah, Sara's buddy, she will always be a friend. Thank you so much for sharing this special young lady with us!
