Sew perfect & a giveaway...

A while back I contacted my friend, Jill of Sew A Fine Seam, to see if she could come up with a pouf of sorts for our son's room.  His room is one of my favourites as far as functionality and style, so I wanted something that would hold up to the wear and tear of a boy but still look good.

Jill, being the sewing master that she is, dove in and produced one of the most beautiful pieces that fit Hunter's room to a "t".  It isn't just a pouf, it's a little piece of sewing art.

This is the top of the piece that greeted me when I first opened the box.  I may have swooned a bit...

That Jill included my boy's initials makes my heart happy...

Jill used antique European grain sacks and filled the pouf with bean bag fill.

This piece was the perfect addition to Hunter's room, and with an upcoming (BIG) photo shoot I am over the moon excited to have it featured :)

If you want to pop over to Jill's shop you can see all of the beautiful pieces she creates, or have her design a custom piece for you.

The Giveaway...

Jill also included a little something extra for me to give away to one of my lucky readers!  This is a lovely little scarf and one of her adorable key fobs!

Here is what you need to do to enter:

1.  Like my Facebook page: Little Cottage Designs

2.  Like Jill's Facebook page: Sew a Fine Seam

3.  Leave me a comment and tell me your funniest sewing story.  Maybe you sewed your finger to a shirt, like my sweet hubby did in high school home economics, or sewed the hem of your skirt to the chair you were sitting on.  Hypothetically, of course...

Sara will pick a winner on Sunday Feb. 23rd- Good Luck!

  3. I liked both of your pages! :) I have had so many sewing mishaps that it is hard to pick. My most memorable and painful one was sewing over my finger. I was really young, so it was easier to do back then. My favorite sewing memory was just watching my aunts, mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother having one of their "quilting circles". I would crawl under the quilting frame and watch all of those hands stitching away on that quilt. Sigh!

    2. Melissa I love your story about the quilting circle! I remember watching my grandma quilt like that and I love the mental pic of the ladies around the quilting frame and you underneath watching those needles make magic!

  4. I liked both of your pages.
I'm really not an avid sewer. I save that for the experts. But I have sewn my sleeve to my machine once and a button to my pants instead of the pants I was trying to sew it on. The only thing I really sew are curtains and that is just a strait line.
Jill is a very talented sewer. I have one of her poufs and love it. Her work is art. I really like all the details she added on your sons pouf. It goes so well in his room.

  6. Question... I noticed in the closeup pic of the pouf, your son's sheets look like they have an additional piece of elastic sewn on the corner. As someone who is ALWAYS battling the fitted-sheet-pop-off, would you be willing to share your source?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes! Those are extra deep twin sized sheets from Threshold, sold at Target. I absolutely love their brand of everything! The quality of the sheets is far better than the expensive ones I've purchased in the past. They also come in other colours and patterns :)

  9. I so adore the pouf! I love Jill's work. So gifted. I like you both on facebook. I wish I knew how to sew. I really should put my mind to it and just learn. I tried once and ended up just totally messing things up. My husband does our buttons and small stuff. I have a wonderful drycleaner that does the rest. lol. Thanks for such a generous giveaway!

  10. I LOVE how that pouf is obviously a work of art...not just grabbed on a quick shopping trip! It's wonderful!!
So a little sewing funny for you...I got a little bit cocky about my abilities. I've never "formally" learned to using my sewing machine, I've just gotten tips/tutorials from my mom and read stuff on the internet. So, I got the wild idea the NIGHT before Valentine's last year that both my children needed cute pj pants for their VDay/PJ party at school. Off to the fabric store I went...sat down at my machine, and got to work. No real pattern, no real ideas what I was doing. My daughter's pants turned out cute, but about 3" too short, and my son's...well...let's just say I was mortified when he insisted on wearing them to school because I'm sure the teachers wondered what kind of shoddy store sold me such a disaster! HA!

  11. My funniest sewing story...hmm... that would have to be the time - as a teenager - my mother tried to teach me to sew a 4-piece t-shirt and I thought I rip all the hair out of my head by the time I finished - I've never sewed again, sorry to say. I stick to sewing on buttons and that's about it!

  12. I'm laughing out loud. Sewing story??? I was probably 12 when my mama TRIED to teach me. She kept saying, "Careful or you'll sew your finger. Careful or you'll sew your finger." Then she's say, "You've got to push it under there. You've got to push it under there." "My finger??? YOu just said I'd sew it." That was it. Does this disqualify me. I did like the pages on facebook because I really do like you both and I LOVE your blog. I think that counts:)

  15. I believe I was in 6th grade. It was mandatory we take a Home EC class. As part of our final grade we had to sew an apron. I loved all the material and thread I picked out. However my final product was not so great. I accidentally sewn the apron and my blouse together. I was devastated and embarrassed then. Now I look back and laugh at my 11 year old self.

  16. I don't sew at all..... My mom had to help me with my sewing project in home ec. I brought it home and she was so horrified she ripped out all of my stitches and tried to get me to re-do it... well I whined so much she ended up doing most of it for me!

  17. When I was in junior high, I made my first dress and it took me a week to hem it because my stitches were about 1/8th of an inch apart... and the thread was bright yellow! My teacher just said, Oh, my!"
