Recognizing your style...

When someone asks me what my style is I have a hard time coming up with a straight answer.

It's coastal.

It's country.

It's cottage.

It's industrial.

It's Frenchy.

It's....well, it's just me.  I don't fit into a single category in any part of my life.  So why should my home?  Truth is, none of us really fit into one style.  Nobody is that one dimensional.

I simply use what speaks to me when decorating.  It could be vintage, or the age of the piece, patina, texture, colour (or lack of!)- it just depends.  I just know when it says, "ME!  PICK ME!"  So I do.

Not sure of the source!

This picture is a perfect example.  I love the contrast of the black and white with a bit of natural wood in the mix. The planked walls and wrought iron hardware.  And that door- swoon.  Could I really pull off a Dutch door in Texas?  No.  We have mosquitos that are bigger than the top opening, but I can paint my builder grade interior doors black....

I also love texture....burlap, hemp, sisal.  And oversized pieces.  We have a small cottage- but I love big impact pieces!

Not sure of this source either, Pinterest find :)

My version of the clock on a smaller budget.  I also added some green into the mix much like the bit of green you see in the above picture.

Clock from Pier One
Kitchen inspiration pictures like this helped us to design our kitchen...I loved the contrast of the white, cream, green/tan, and bits of black with wood....

Pinterest
Our kitchen is similar in colours, finishes, etc....but ours and on a smaller budget.  Again, the cream, white, green/tan, bits of black....  Similar, but not the same ;)

So that is pretty much a run down of where my style comes from.  Don't feel as if you have to put yourself or your home into a single category.  Style, much like personality, is a more complicated thing.  Follow what speaks to you, what makes you happy when you look at it.  Ultimately it is your home and your life that you are building :)

  2. Well said. I luv your look!! I cannot lock my style in one category either. A couple of years ago, it was a Tuscan/Country/Gee.. all the sun drenched colours of Tuscany and some country tossed in. Now, it is French/Country/Cottage/Gee. :-)
    Happy weekend!

  5. Again, I find we both are on the same wavelenth. :) I was linking a past post on a forum where folks were bemoaning the incohesiveness of their style, all the money they've spent on decor and how difficult it is to decide what to keep/store and what to purge.

I like that you reiterate just do what you love....'cause in the end it will work if you love it. No need to fit your style into a box.

Here's the link to my post if you'd like to read it :)

    1. Hi Missy! The pig was from Tuesday Morning, the garlic keeper is from Amazon (they have a larger one for potatoes!) The Gruene Hall sign was made by Melaine at My Sweet Savannah- just contact her and mention me ;) The clock came from Pier One and the mermaid was a gift from my dad.

Come visit anytime! I used to live in SA, graduated from St.Mary's University.

  7. Oh my goodness I absolutely love your style.

Almost every time my parents visit, my mom will ask what is your style. I always answer I don't really have a so called style our home is just me. I'm so fortunate that my husband really doesn't have an opinion on how I decorate. Somehow everything just goes and all our rooms flow so well together.

I love your kitchen and all the open shelving. I look forward to reading your post and seeing pictures of your beautiful little cottage.

    1. Just as it should be! I hate walking into homes that look like Kirklands threw up. No personal pictures of pieces that mean something to them- just stuff to stick up on the walls. I like that my things have a story and a meaning for us. If you stay true to that then everything just sorta jells and works. Thank you for your sweet words on our cottage :)
