Laundry room revisited...

One of the first rooms we changed when we moved in was the laundry room.  The builder had installed a headbanger (overhead cabinet) and a rod.  That's it.  My desire to do laundry in that room was about as high as my desire to go camping.  (Unless of course it is Glamping, because I am all over that idea!)

Anyway, here is what the room looked like when we moved in:

Here is the cabinet that started the whole renovation plan:

I loved everything about this cabinet, but the size and the price were way too big!

So my handy-hubby built his own....

The cabinet itself is basically a box using 3/4 inch plywood.
He added the peg board so that we could hang our cleaning supplies.

Here are a few steps that Travis took to build the cabinet doors:

1.  He used 1 x 4 inexpensive knotty pine boards.
2.  Then he attached the boards together using dowel pins and wood glue, with a 1x4 brace on the back to support the hinges.
3.  Then he attached the hinges and hung the doors.

And here some pictures of how the room looks today...

Rug is from Dash & Albert

One of my must have items was a spot for Jack's things.  Spoiled weenies rock!

Sign by the talented Melaine of My Sweet Savannah

I love the galvanized gate hardware.

The burlap tags for the bins were made by my talented cousin at Sweet Tea & Linen on Etsy.

Large pins are from Ballard Designs.

My grandmother's iron- one of my treasured possessions.
This is Travis' signature style on anything he builds.  When he first began dabbling in woodworking I told him I liked a "chunky, clean lined, boxy, Pottery Barn style" type of feel.  This laundry room now works beautifully with the design of our kitchen:

Paint colours:  Sharkey Grey by Martha Stewart & Sail Cloth by Ralph Lauren
Lighting: Lamps Plus

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section and I will be happy to answer them!

Now I gotta go fold some towels...does anyone else walk by and hit the power button to fluff them instead of just folding the darn things already??  Yeah, I do that too ;)

  4. Love it! Wish I had a space to put such a thing. My laundry is behind bi-fold doors that are at the end of the kitchen and right in front of the back door... So no cute cabinet for me.... but maybe I can get hubby to build similar doors to replace the bi-fold ...."Oh Honey..."

  5. What a wonderful transformation...your husband is a genius. And kudos to you on making it such a cute, welcome spot with all of your details! Laundry would just not be such a chore in a space like this. Well, it would still be a chore and yes, I love that fluff button!

  7. Love your laundry room. Great idea placing the hangers on the top as design elements. I want to know where you got those cool wire baskets? I'm hoping they don't each cost an arm and a leg?

    1. The baskets were a find at Tuesday morning. Not expensive, but you know how outlet shopping goes- if you see it and don't buy it right then it will be gone the next time you go back. I have seen similar baskets at Homegoods.

  8. I'm wondering where you got the old-fashioned screen door that's on the entrance to the laundry room? The room is gorgeous, by the way.

    1. Annie- Love your name- it's our daughter's name too! The door came from a hardware store (Ace) then we painted it and beat it up a bit. Thank you so much for stopping by!

  9. This is one gorgeous laundry room. How great to have a husband that is a craftsman too. I'm still in dreaming mode for my laundry room (my hubby is more scientific than techy) but the first thing I'm going to do is paint a French La Buanderie sign to go over the door. It's a start! I'm off now to check out the rest of your blog. So glad I found you at The Dedicated House. Blessings, Patti

    1. Angela- We purchased new ones- they are LG and we love them! The others came with the house, they were GE and builder grade. I would not recommend GE brand for washers and dryers.

  15. Fabulous! I also saved that pic of the PB cabinets. I too loved everything about them. We are finishing our basement and I thought I would do something similar for my pantry. Found and old door and decided to do that instead. Love, love how yours turned out! The entire laundry is so much fun. I hopped over from Old Things New. Would love if you shared sometime with my party, Share Your Cup Thursday. It's about sharing what makes you happy. Now a new follower.
