Cottage signs...

If you are here from My Sweet Savannah- then welcome!  I have "known" Melaine in the blog world for quite a few years now, and she is my go-to-girl for signs.  I adore chippy vintage signs, and if you read Melaine's blog you know she has mad skills with a table saw and paint brush!

I have always had a love for signs, quotes, and sayings.   I especially love signs that hold a deeper meaning for us, and I have tried to incorporate those into our cottage.

Our family sign is so important to me.  It shows that our family was created when Travis and I married. I was a single mom with three children- the oldest of whom has Down Syndrome, and I really thought that I would never love again.  Then I met Travis, and boy was I wrong!  Life is funny that way.  Even though I was bringing three other people into our marriage,  it really felt that our family was created on that day.

When we chose our home site on our little pond I contacted Melaine to make this sign for us.  We never dreamed of being where we are today- and we are reminded every day just how hard we worked to get here.   I love homes that have a name with a meaning!

We live on the Texas coast, but just a few hours away is our getaway spot- Gruene, Texas.  We absolutely love it there.  Dancing in Gruene Hall (the oldest dance hall in Texas), shopping, antiquing, wineries, B & B's- Gruene has it all tied up with burlap ribbon and Texas charm.

The "NO Vacancy" sign was made for Sara's room.  Her room reflects her love of swimming and the beach.   The sign for me reminds me that there is no room for "she will never...." where Sara is concerned.  We have created a world where the sky is the limit- despite what doctors told us when she was born.

Melaine made this laundry room sign using an old piece of molding.  It's chippy perfection makes me smile every time I walk into the room.  My husband and I designed and built our laundry room- I love that this sign is the crowning jewel to this project we completed together.

This sign used to hang in Melaine's kitchen, now it hangs in ours.  It translates to "umbrellas of all kinds".  I love the faded grey/blue of this sign.   For me it signifies that we are all unique and flawed but perfect for each other.

This is a sign that I had Melaine make after I watched the movie Alice in Wonderland.  There was a scene where the Mad Hatter told Alice that she had "lost her muchness".  When Alice asked what muchness was, he replied, "You know, that thing that makes you- YOU.  You were much more muchier before." Melaine had no idea where I was in my life at that time, but having that sign to look at each day inspired me to leave a career I thought was right for me and go out and reclaim my muchness.   Today this sign hangs in my workshop where I paint and refinish old furniture.  In short, I am much muchier as a painter than I was as a teacher.

Be sure to leave a comment- I would love to read about your favourite signs, sayings or quotes and why they are significant to you :)

Have a lovely day!

just had to comment, because - I too LOVE the quote from Alice about muchness. I once made invitations and thank-you's about being much more muchy!! :-)
Oh, and yes, love the signs and Melaine's work also. But, the muchness is what kept me from solely lurking!

  7. I have many signs in my house. Some with meaning, some just because they're cool. Some I've made, some I purchased because they were vintage/antique. As one of your readers said, they are the perfect jewelry for a room!
