The Library...

10 months ago it looked like this...

Then it started to look like this...

And finally, today it looks like this...

Part of the design had to include a space for the vintage slot machine my dad gave me...

and a cozy window seat to sit and read in...

I also wanted a bookshelf that would accommodate front facing books & pictures to display...

I love the simple chicken wire on the cabinet doors...

One of my favourite things is actually right outside the library.  The butler's bell my mom gave me for my birthday.  Straight from England and just like the ones on Downton Abbey.  Now if the butler would only show up...

The other part of the butler's bell on the inside of the room...

a spot to charge electronics...

desk essentials...

books from my childhood...

So from this...

to this...

  2. Oh my goodness, what a gorgeous and functional space you have transformed that room into. I dream of built-ins like this. Travis is a keeper! I adore the tall cabinets and the simple lines with the lovely corbel and chicken wire details.

    1. Thank you! The corbels were an attempt to pull in some vintage touches to the room. They were an Etsy find :)

    1. I was a bit unsure of the colour at first- it looked very industrial, but once the room came together it just looked moody- which is what a library should feel like (to me!)

  7. 10 months is a long time to wait for something. But I do say this room was worth waiting for. It is stunning. I love all of the built ins and the little touches like the corbels and chicken wire. Your husband is super talented. Everything is perfect. Oh and I love the butler's bell. How cool is that.

    1. My mom gave me the bell as a birthday gift last summer. We are HUGE Downton Abbey fans, so now we ring the bell at the start of every new episode. We are such dorks!

    1. Thanks! My kids are always asking how you dial on that thing. I had to explain how "in the old days" you just picked it up and a operator was there.

That is truly a fantastic transformation of the room. Every picture speaks of the aesthetic touch you have added with the hardware elements.

    1. It was a lot of hours and we had to work around Travis shift work. We crunched at the end and packed in two solid weekends of working on it. Labour of love!

  25. I have just discovered your blog and love it. I came across from The Dedicated House to look at your Library. I am currently planning a small office makeover and love your bookshelves. I have been battling with my husband re freestanding or built in. I would love built in just like yours but it is actually our third bedroom so for re-selling maybe not such a good idea as we may have to turn it into a bedroom when we come to sell. I have a small home like you but it has a big heart and I also have some big peices that I loathe to part with and have managed to fit them in.

If you get a chance to pop over to my blog you will see on my side bar under, more posts you may enjoy, a feature on my living room in blue and white. I have a large shelving unit in my living room which is quite modern, I am planning to somehow add more shelves, change the doors to look more country and possibly paint and age it with chalk paint. A bit of a project to say the least but after seeing your built in's I think I could create something similar.

    This transformation is fabulous.
