10 months ago it looked like this...
Then it started to look like this...
And finally, today it looks like this...
Part of the design had to include a space for the vintage slot machine my dad gave me...
and a cozy window seat to sit and read in...
I also wanted a bookshelf that would accommodate front facing books & pictures to display...
I love the simple chicken wire on the cabinet doors...
One of my favourite things is actually right outside the library. The butler's bell my mom gave me for my birthday. Straight from England and just like the ones on Downton Abbey. Now if the butler would only show up...
So from this...
to this...
Paint colour: Sherwin Williams Functional Gray
Door/Cabinet pulls: Pottery Barn
Light Fixture: Ballard Designs
Wood for cabinets: Red Oak cabinet plywood
Contractor: My husband, Travis.

I love it. The chicken wire just makes it!
ReplyDeleteThank you! The chicken wire had been in my mind since before we began building. I love the rustic look with a bit of shimmer ;)
DeleteOh my goodness, what a gorgeous and functional space you have transformed that room into. I dream of built-ins like this. Travis is a keeper! I adore the tall cabinets and the simple lines with the lovely corbel and chicken wire details.
ReplyDeleteThank you! The corbels were an attempt to pull in some vintage touches to the room. They were an Etsy find :)
DeleteGORGEOUS! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteSo beautiful! Great color too!
ReplyDeleteI was a bit unsure of the colour at first- it looked very industrial, but once the room came together it just looked moody- which is what a library should feel like (to me!)
DeleteAmazing! I love the chicken wire!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
DeleteGorgeous! Love the chicken wire ... and the colour.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteI love it! The chicken wire looks terrific - everything is perfect.

Thanks!!
Delete10 months is a long time to wait for something. But I do say this room was worth waiting for. It is stunning. I love all of the built ins and the little touches like the corbels and chicken wire. Your husband is super talented. Everything is perfect. Oh and I love the butler's bell. How cool is that.
ReplyDeleteMy mom gave me the bell as a birthday gift last summer. We are HUGE Downton Abbey fans, so now we ring the bell at the start of every new episode. We are such dorks!
DeleteYou and your husband did an amazing job. What a cozy, welcoming space.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love that it's the first room you see when entering the cottage :)
DeleteLove this! thanks for linking up Tricia! I love the vintage phone! laura
ReplyDeleteThanks! My kids are always asking how you dial on that thing. I had to explain how "in the old days" you just picked it up and a operator was there.
DeleteWow! Beautiful work by your Hubby (and you :O)) . . looks so nice. Blessings
ReplyDeleteThank you, it is for sure a team effort :)
DeleteIt looks fabulous. what a terrific use of space with everything so well thought out ~ Bravo! The chicken wire is a wonderful touch.
ReplyDeleteI love chicken wire, but it is not the easiest thing to work with!
DeleteCan I move into your library?? The chicken wire, the front facing shelf... I love it all! It is beautiful and perfectly styled.
ReplyDeleteHa! I know, Travis joked that I may move my bed in here...

ReplyDeleteThat is truly a fantastic transformation of the room. Every picture speaks of the aesthetic touch you have added with the hardware elements.
It's all about the furniture jewelry!
DeleteWow that is really nice. You've done a fabulous job. Wanna come organize me and make my office/sewing room look so nice. You'd cringe.
ReplyDeleteI'm close well sorta.
Thanks for sharing your really awesome space
Small steps on the organizing. Just do 15 min a day...you will get there!
DeleteTotally in love! We're not the contractor types, but you make it look so tempting! I can only imagine how many hours this project took from start to finish. Enjoy every minute in there! PS - I'm a huge fan of chicken wire. Love that you used it!
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot of hours and we had to work around Travis shift work. We crunched at the end and packed in two solid weekends of working on it. Labour of love!
DeleteSuch a cozy & beautifully put together space.... I adore every detail!!! Your home is for sure one of my all time favorites!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!
DeleteThis space is beautiful! You should be so proud of yourself and your hubby. Do you walk in the room and just stare and sigh a million times a day? I sure would!!!
ReplyDeleteSo inspiring!
Yeah, I have to admit that I do. It is the biggest build we have ever tackled, but it is my very favourite so far!

Your library is so inspiring! I'm jealous of your high ceilings, and I love the touch with the chicken wire! Way to go!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Miss Mustard Seed's link party!
We are working on building a ladder to reach those upper shelves. The ceilings are nice- but they are waaaay up there to get to a book, lol!
DeleteThank you for sharing your inspiring space! The chicken wire and topiary on your desk are my favorite parts.

ReplyDeleteAmazing transformation!!! Just absolutely wowed!

I have just discovered your blog and love it. I came across from The Dedicated House to look at your Library. I am currently planning a small office makeover and love your bookshelves. I have been battling with my husband re freestanding or built in. I would love built in just like yours but it is actually our third bedroom so for re-selling maybe not such a good idea as we may have to turn it into a bedroom when we come to sell. I have a small home like you but it has a big heart and I also have some big peices that I loathe to part with and have managed to fit them in.
ReplyDeleteIf you get a chance to pop over to my blog you will see on my side bar under, more posts you may enjoy, a feature on my living room in blue and white. I have a large shelving unit in my living room which is quite modern, I am planning to somehow add more shelves, change the doors to look more country and possibly paint and age it with chalk paint. A bit of a project to say the least but after seeing your built in's I think I could create something similar.
This transformation is fabulous.

Will do, thank you so much for stopping by!!
