Happy Birthday to me...

Today I am 45 years old.  That is just five years shy of half a century.  I don't feel 45...

What does that mean exactly?  I don't feel 45?  I don't feel it on the inside- in fact I still call my mom and dad to ask questions and verify information.  But the outside of me?  Yeah, I am so pushing half a century.

I used to look like this a couple of years ago:

Thin, but not healthy.  That was a skinny by stress diet- and let me tell you, it's not fun and the results are not worth it.

When I quit teaching I vowed that I was going to spend quality time with my family.  Dinners around the table, good food, dessert- the works!

Combine that with the fact that I do not like to exercise and well, you can do the math.  I've gained at least 25 pounds in one year.  That doesn't sound too horrible, unless you factor in that I am only 5 feet tall.  Right now the extra weight is not bothering me on the level of what size I wear.  In the above picture I was a size two...now I am a size 12.  I am a hippy girl with big boobs, even when I'm thin...so a few extra pounds really accentuates the hips, but with a tiny waist.

I am pretty honest with myself.  I am not going to stop cooking yummy food for my family- no extreme diets or cleanses.   I am going to try and throw in some exercise because I think it may be my best option to be more healthy.  So for a girl who hates to exercise, what were my options?

Y'all know I love zombies...so I bought this app for my iphone:

Zombies RUN!
I figure some fast walking, because please- I do not run, would get me the exercise I need to balance out the foods I eat.   I always used to joke that I wouldn't run even if I was being chased by zombies, but since I've never actually been chased by zombies, I don't know that to be entirely true.

I'll check back in on this in about a month.  I'm going to make a few changes in my eating habits and throw in some of these zombie runs.  We will see.  The goal is healthy, not skinny- keeping that in mind as I start this.

Do you hear shuffling feet and moaning?  I'd like to say that is the zombie app, but it may be me....

  2. Happy, Happy Birthday to you!!! :-) I have got you by a few years, but it's all ok because I don't feel my age either..... forever young!
I say my kids keep me young. Hahahahaa.. Us shorter girls need to stick together. At 5'2" I thought I was the shortest! I spend my life in heels as I live in a house of 6' tall men. But unlike you, I am build like a teenage boy... no big anything. I always dreamed of curves... but that was /is just a dream.
From one little bit to another, may your day be filled with everything you wish for!!
    Hugs, Gee

  3. Happy Birthday! I have never been a size 2. 12 to 14 is my average and I am only 5'3 also with big boobs and hips. I also hate to exercise, but am trying to walk more especially if the darn rain would go away. Of course I am also almost 13 years older than you. Even harder to lose.

Have a great weekend and watch out for those zombies!

    1. Oh Kim, I wish we lived closer! I'd go walking with you :) 12-14 is the AVERAGE dress size. Marilyn Monroe was a 16 and considered the sex symbol of our lifetime! I have poor body image to begin with, so the extra weight, while I know it is OKAY, is hard for me to accept. Ugh!

  4. The older we get, the less we can eat, even if we exercise. I gave up flour for 5 years and was the thinnest/fittest in my life - size 4. I have put back on about 15 pounds and want to take it off, not to be skinny, but because of the way I felt. I am a size 6, but I don't feel fantastic healthy wise.

  6. Happy Birthday!! I could have written this post right along with you. Stopped teaching and moved a year ago...cook....eat out....time with family and friends....gain weight. :) So on the Zombie app you walk but don't run? I tried Couch to 5K but after 6 weeks or just had to admit that I hate running. By the way, I had my 50th last week! Life is good.

  7. Happy Birthday! Sounds like the story of so many women I know. Including me! I hate to exercise too. Started walking with a friend who has heart issues. Her doc. said to just get out and walk, don't worry about your pace, slow and steady. And it works! Who knew! Oh....and today was my hubbies B.D. also. He's 13 plus years older than I am and in better health than most people half his age. Darn men! Hope you had a beautiful day!

  8. I am wishing you the best of luck. I have been up and down over the years and it is always so good to feel good about yourself no matter what weight you at. I would rather be a bit heavier than be thin because I am stressed out. God bless ya-xo Diana

  9. I started eating no processed foods (no bread, no sugar) and the weight fell off. it took a few weeks to adjust and stop craving junk but now if I eat it, I get a headache.

    1. I've heard that from several people! I know in my head that eating less processed and more natural foods is better, but I am such a carboholic! BREAD!! LIFE!! YUM!! *sigh*

  12. Happy birthday! I just found your blog and your home is lovely. I can relate to the food thing completely. I've retired and put on weight but I'm so much happier inside than I used to be it's kind of hard to get motivated to lose the weight. I'm off to see more of your home.

  13. Happy belated birthday! The best I ever felt (and looked) was when I was walking a lot, yet I always think I have to be a runner to be fit. Good luck with the app; that would totally freak me out! although I am bravely reading World War Z right now. :)
