Fried Green Tomatoes...

I am a Southern girl through and through.  I love monograms, seersucker and fried...anything.

Especially fried green tomatoes.   If you haven't tried them yet, you have at least seen the movie, yes?

One of my favs.

One thing I love about Southern books by Southern writers is they almost always include the recipes of the foods eaten by characters in the back of the book.  They know how we Southern folks are about the food ;)

Here is my recipe for fried green tomatoes:
Green tomatoes (4)

1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 tbsp. cajun seasoning

1 egg beaten
1/2 cup buttermilk or regular milk (buttermilk is better ;)

Salt & pepper

Vegetable oil

Iron skillet  (you can use a regular skillet, but iron is better.  Did you know that one of the reasons we have iron deficiencies in our diets is because we no longer cook on iron skillets??  So get one.  It's a health thing.  Your welcome ;)

Mix your dry ingredients and put in a shallow bowl.
Mix the egg and buttermilk and put in a shallow bowl.

Cut up tomatoes into thinish/not too thick/not too thin slices.

Sprinkle with salt and let sit for five minutes.

Heat oil in skillet over medium heat.

Dredge tomatoes through egg mixture, then through the dry mixture.

Fry for 3-4 minutes each side until golden brown.

Transfer to a plate with napkin to soak up any extra grease.

Eat.  Enjoy.  Celebrate your Southernness ;)
