Robin eggs...

I am not a fan of Easter eggs.  Being a fan of monochromatic interiors as well as neutral Christmas decor, I just find the whole pastel thing a bit much.  Kind of like Easter threw up.

I saw these on Pinterest and thought they would be eggs I could live with.  Well, only for a little while because y'all know that eating Easter eggs is really not that safe since most of them are out of the refrigerator for more than an hour.  But I digress.

Here is how we made the Robin Egg Easter Eggs:

First cook the eggs.  I know this seems like a 'duh', but I'm throwing it out there because I was a kid who went off to college not knowing how to make ice cubes.  I'm not kidding.

My dad has the perfect recipe for hard boiled eggs and I have to call him every time to get it because I mix that recipe up with how to make perfect corn on the cob.  Again, I did not know how to make ice cubes so...

Put the eggs in the pot.  Do not stack them, make sure they are all on the bottom of the pan and covered in water.  Then bring the water to a boil over medium/high heat.  As soon as the water starts to boil take the pot off the burner and let it sit, covered, for 15 minutes.  After 15 minutes fill the pot with cold water.  Hard boiled egg perfection:)

To get the eggs a Robin's blue you will need to take a 1/2 cup of water and bring it to a boil.  Then take it off the heat and add 1 tsp of white vinegar and a few drops of blue food colouring.

Put about three eggs into the pot and swirl it around a bit.  This will make you think of martinis, so you can make one really quick while the eggs turn a lovely shade of pale blue.

The only other thing you will need to create these bird egg beauties is a gold sharpie.

Then just add a few dots to your eggs...

Thank you to my mom for being my hand model.  She has lovely hands :)
Then try to get your two teenaged children to join in on the Robin egg fest.  To which they will say something about stunting their creativity and lack of creative license and a host of other things that will cause you to regret raising them to think on their own and not just follow the directions you gave them.

Give up on making them put gold dots on the eggs and let them exercise their creative freedom.

Even though Robins do not lay eggs with smiley faces or 'defend pop punk' written on them.  Smile and put them in the refrigerator anyway.

Then turn your attention back to your lovely mother who is a rule follower and a perfectionist.

I hope you have a lovely holiday with family and friends :)

  1. These are darling and you had a great helper! I make my hard boiled the same way you do. A teaspoon of vinegar in the water also helps to keep the yolk in the center (if you are planning to make deviled eggs).

    Happy Easter!

  2. :-) Luv your eggs. I also am not a fan of the whole pastel themed thing. We did dye eggs with our GrandBella and put them directly back in the fridge. They will become deviled eggs for the evening meal.
Happy Easter to you and yours.

    1. My dad used to take onion skins (the orange ones) and boil them down. That is what we dyed our eggs with. The longer they were in the onion dye they would turn almost a mahogany colour. lovely!
