Where is your home office?

One of my favourite blogs to read is The Inspired Room Today's topic: Where is your home office? I always find it so interesting to see how other people keep their lives organized. I know that for me to be sane I have to have order to my life. With four kids and all of their activities, appointments, parties, not to mention my work schedule I have to keep things in line or I will quickly melt into a puddle of discombobulation.

When we moved into this house it had three sinks in the kitchen area. One by the stove, one on the island, and a third sink in the wet-bar. Yes, a wet bar. I still associate wet bars with the 1960's and me making a martini for my husband who slaved all day at the office. I'm wearing an apron of course, my husband looks and dresses a bit like Mike Brady, and the kids have magically disappeared to their bedrooms so that Dad and Mom can enjoy their martinis....

Anyway, Travis promptly tore that out and installed my desk. My work area, blogging area, bill paying area (well, Travis does that...) and a place where I could keep track of my kids "stuff". One of the things I wanted to use was the light fixture that was in the hallway of the home I grew up in right across the street from NASA. The old woman who had owned the house had honeymooned in France in the 1920's. While there she bought all of the light fixtures that were in the house. My parents kept most of them when they moved and are using all of the chandeliers in their new home on the water. I kept one though. It's a small carriage light that used to hang in the hallway that I shared with my sister in the old house. As a kid it reminded me of Cinderella's carriage. Don't ask me why I thought that, I just did.

The cool thing about having a husband who can build things is obviously the monetary savings that not having to hire a contractor gives us. But the neatest thing about working with my husband is that he really listens when I describe what I want. He always manages to turn the space into EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Which pretty much sums up how I feel about him. He's exactly what I was looking for in a husband. He keeps me organized, he listens, he's attentive, a hard worker with a great sense of humor.

Maybe there was something to that Cinderella's carriage thing after all...

So tell me, where is your home office?

  3. That's not an office that's used - where are the piles of papers, the stacks of magazines, the tables full of stuff - lord, you can even see your desk top.
When we moved to Vegas from San Diego we bought a bigger house (why not, all the kids had finally moved out?) with four bedrooms, and the back bedroom was set up as an office, with a whole wall of bookcases and a built in computer desk. I added an extra counter for my wife's computer and that is where we work. No pictures - too many piles of junk in my place.

  8. I remember when you first posted this, such a brilliant idea. And of course you have doctored it up really nice since then.

I'm lucky (or not lol) to actually have a house that has an office area built into it. The people we bought it from, ran a drywall business from here. And since I work from home (real works, piles of crap, lots of computers etc) it's really nice to have it all in a specified place, away from our living area. If it weren't such a flippin mess, I'd show you. :)
